Energy Calculator

This calculator helps you determine the energy usage and impact from using a certain amount of electricity every day. These are average figures from energy produced by burning coal which supplies approximately 1/2 of the country's energy. If your electricity is supplied by hydro, gas or nuclear power, then these numbers will be different.

Enter the number of watts, hours per day and average cost per kilowatt hour for your house (look at your electrical bill and be sure to enter the top rate that you are paying). Then press the Calculate button to determine the effect.

The consequences of the production of energy for this single item for one year is listed below. This assumes that all electricity is generated by burning coal, which actually supplies 50% of the country's electricity. The numbers that update at the top of each page showing the benefits of actual lightbulb sales are calculated using the actual percentage from each energy source -- coal, natural gas and oil. Nuclear and solar are not included as they have much less measurable impact in these areas.
